Each of us has a blueprint for making a complete human being in each one of our cells. That information is called your genome. Your genome makes you unique, drives much of your appearance, and determines your health status and disease risks. Each person’s genetic code is written in just 4 letters and can be read using a process called next generation sequencing. Come and learn how individual patient genome information is being used in health care, for cancer, for children and adults with inherited diseases. Participants in this café are asked to bring a laptop, if they have one to bring, so small groups can work on patient cases to discover what may be causing the person to be sick. We will share our findings with the entire group.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER Debra Leonard, MD, PhD, practices molecular genomic pathology and is the leader of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The test results generated by the clinical part of her department represent approximately 80 percent of the data in the electronic health record, and drive approximately 70 percent of medical decisions. Dr. Leonard established the Genomic Medicine Program for the University of Vermont Health Network since coming to Vermont in 2013. The program includes clinical genomic testing, as well as genomic education and research.

What is a Teen Science Café? It is a free, fun way for teens to explore science, engineering and technology with local scientists, engineers and technology experts. Teens participate in informal discussions and hands-on activities to learn about different topics. And, there is always free food! Planned and run by teens for teens.
