Description

Class Description
Are you gardening for monarch butterflies? Then you’ll want to join us for this exploration of all things milkweed! In this class we will discuss

  • milkweeds of Maryland and their identification
  • biology and ecology of milkweeds
  • milkweed conservation issues
  • alien milkweed update
  • design/aesthetic considerations for use in garden beds
  • use in native meadows
  • soil and light requirements
  • commercial availability
  • maintenance considerations

By the end of class you will be familiar with Maryland’s milkweed species, their biology and conservation concerns, and how to include them in your garden/meadow designs with confidence.

Pre-class Assignment
Visit the local hardware stores, garden centers, etc., where you normally purchase plants at retail. Look at all the milkweed species available for sale (native, alien, cultivars, etc.) and fill out this table with your observations. You may need to ask a store staff member for information, especially for the EcoRegion Origin (i.e., the last column in the table). In class we will compile the lists to determine the extent to which locally native milkweeds are or are not available at local garden centers/retail stores.
