ALICIA N’ GHETTOLAND

Play Synopsis

'Alicia 'N Ghettoland' is a hip/hop stageplay musical written, directed and produced by Lisa Hopkins and is performed by children from ages to 7 to 16. The play was designed to use art to saves lives of children to prevent child abduction that can lead to human trafficking. Old school hit songs to hip/hop modern day music genres are incorporated in the story with explosive choreography designed by Musa A. Cooper from seasons 1 & 2 of,' So You Think You Can Dance.'

Alicia and her sister, Eddie argue, and is told that she is an adopted child and is hurt by this information. She runs away hurt and wanders off in the streets hoping to find pieces of her family history. She comes across the character, Flavor who has the resemblance of ‘Flavor Fla’ from the hip/hop radical rap group, ‘Public Enemy. Flavor wears a watch around his neck and is always complaining that he is late. Alicia in search of her real mother, becomes fascinated by Flavor’s odd appearance and follows him off via dancing to an original rap song written by Jaron Hopkins who portrays Flavor to a strange and unfamiliar adventure ghetto-land.

Flavor and Alicia end up at a children’s fun center called the’ House of Games,’ where children are playing cards placing bets with candy while dancing and playing around with one another. Alicia encounters the twins who are both infatuated by her looks and mannerisms. Later, Queenie who runs the ‘House of Games’ is introduced to Alicia by Flavor. Right then Queenie wants Alicia to learn to socialize with the other children by playing the game Jim Rummy card game that creatively turns into a dance.

Flavor takes Alicia to a community garden where beautiful and exotic flowers live and as they befriend Alicia, Flavor has to run and leave her to run an errand for Queenie. Flavor feels that Alicia will be safe in the hands of the flower girls as they warn Alicia that she has to go through the town of Hattentown where Madd Hatten, the pimp resides. They share vital information to Alicia that Madd Hatten is all about making money, and he will mistreat you, use and abuse you if he doesn’t get his way.

Upon meeting Madd Hatten, Alicia is prepared to refrain from his tricks, but she becomes seduced by his trickery and ends up working as one of his ladies of the night into her early teenage life. Alicia becomes lost and turned out, but there is a twist to the story as Alicia is reacquainted with Flavor who ends up leading her to her family.
