Opening reception: 6:00 - 7:00 PM

You are cordially invited to the opening of ArtYard’s inaugural Queer Icons exhibition, with Silky Shoemaker’s plywood portraits of Gladys Bentley, Langston Hughes, Essex Hemphill, Susan Sontag, Agnes Martin, Dorian Corey, Leslie Feinberg, Barbara Jordan, Bayard Rustin, and Esquerita!

Silky Shoemaker is a performer, visual artist, and community organizer based in Oakland CA. She makes work that explores the absurdity and profundity of queer life thru painting, curation, and slapstick melodrama. Her work has been seen in such illustrious venues as ArtHouse Austin, the Warhol Museum, The Sculpture Center (Queens) and punk houses throughout the USA. She is one-third of the performance collective Shaboom! and also dances across the world with notorious post genderpunk Christeene. Silky is the founder of GAYBIGAYGAY Music Fest and once curated the world’s first Gay Wax Museum.

Following the opening, there will be a live concert with Alexis P. Suter

American roots and blues music ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfjiYVlBnOs )

Alexis P. Suter is the owner of that big, booming voice you can hear roaring out of Brooklyn into the heart of North America and beyond. Miss Suter and her powerful and unique ensemble artfully blend the lines between Blues, Soul, Roots and Rock music. Alexis' voice ranges from a pained passion to explosive and soul-bearing.

Alexis and her band have opened for B.B. King, Levon Helm, Bo Diddley, Buddy Guy, Allen Toussaint, Emmylou Harris, Johnny Winter, Elvis Costello and for the 20-year reunion of the Muddy Waters Band.

At the highly prestigious Blues Music Awards, Alexis was nominated for Best Contemporary Female Artist in 2017, The Koko Taylor Vocalist in 2015, and for Best Soul/Blues Female Vocalist in 2013.

APSB are currently in the finishing stages of a brand new full length BE LOVE, set for a March 18 release.
