Description

Hike Rating: Difficult; 7 miles roundtrip
Hike Leaders: Jeff Scheetz, FANs of the Deschutes Canyon Area HIking Coordinator

Hike starts along a scenic rim and steeply descends into Wychus Creek Canyon, passing below cliff towers and a dry waterfall. A water fording at Whychus Creek (about knee deep) is required to continue on the mostly level trail to the confluence of Whychus Creek and the Deschutes River. The trail ends in a pleasant ponderosa pine grove at the river's edge. The confluence offers wonderful views of colorful canyon walls.

There is no outhouse facility. Bring a minimum of 1 quart of water, snacks, sunscreen and a hat. Wear your favorite sturdy closed-toe hiking shoes. Wading shoes, a towel, and hiking poles are useful for fording Whychus Creek.

Meet at the kiosk/gate on Forest Service Road 6360, and we will carpool the rough road (approx 5 miles) to the parking lot. The road to the trailhead is rough, but it does not require an "all wheel" vehicle. Please be at the kiosk no later than 8:00 a.m.

Group size is limited to 8 people, and dogs are not allowed on this hike. If you sign up and later need to cancel, please do so as soon as possible so that people on the wait list can be invited to join this hike. Thank you!
