Event description
Scenic hike includes views of cliff towers, wading across Whychus Creek, and ponderosa pines at Whychus Creek-Deschutes River confluence.

About this event

Hike Rating: Moderate to Difficult, 6 miles total, out and back. Whychus Creek crossing on foot.

Guide: Jeff Scheetz

Hike starts along a scenic ridgeline and steeply descends into Whychus Creek Canyon. A water fording at Whychus Creek is required to continue on the mostly level trail to the confluence of Whychus Creek and the Deschutes River.  The trail ends in a pleasant ponderosa pine grove at the river's edge.  The confluence offers wonderful views of colorful canyon walls. The initial descent into the canyon is steep and keep in mind that the group must hike back up at the end of the hike. Rattlesnakes may be encountered on or near the trail this time of year.

Bring a minimum of 1 quart of water, snacks, sunscreen and a hat.  Bring your face mask for situations where social distancing may not be possible. Wear your sturdy closed-toe hiking shoes.  Wading shoes, a towel, and hiking poles are useful for fording Whychus Creek.   There is no outhouse facility.

We will meet at the kiosk/gate on Forest Service Road 6360, and then we will caravan the rough road (approximately 5 miles) to the trailhead parking lot.  The road to the trailhead is rough, but it does not require an "all wheel" vehicle.  Please be at the kiosk no later than 8:00 a.m.

Group size is limited to 8 people (including guides), and pets are not allowed on this hike. If you sign up and later need to cancel, please do so as soon as possible so that people on the wait list can be invited to join this hike.
