On August 24th at 4:30PM, an exclusive World Premiere of "Why Not Now? The Final Cut" with Alan Watts will be showing at Harmonia in Sausalito (the former iconic Record Plant). The film combines rare and never-before-seen footage of one of Sausalito’s most colorful characters, Alan Watts. From his Sausalito houseboat, The Vallejo, and Muir Woods retreat, Alan Watts brought Eastern thought into popular culture in the Sixties. Vintage film and mind-expanding audio combines with animation from "The Simpsons" animator Eddie Roasas and background art from Tom Killion to present Alan Watts' ever-current and thought-provoking perspectives. Several Alan Watts animations by "South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker will precede the film screening.
The evening will start with a cocktail hour in the garden and Tim Weed & friends will perform for us and celebrate this special event with Harmonia. Tim Weed is an acoustic multi-instrumentalist, classical banjo virtuoso, and singer-songwriter whose music traverses genres and defies categorization. His collection of original classical works for the 5-string banjo, Milagros, has been featured on National Public Radio and has been highly praised. His music has been performed at chamber music festivals, and he has performed for the Dalai Lama. Band members include Debbie Daly, Allison Faust, and special guests.
At 6:30PM Mark Watts will introduce the program and lead a discussion about his father's life and works. Mark has been an editor, curator, and now Director of his father's media projects. The evening will conclude after the screening with a Q& A and after party in garden from 8:30-11:00PM. At this point you will have a chance to have a more intimate conversation with Mark Watts, and listen to more great music. A host bar, and a food truck will be available. Ticket price $30.00 includes after party.
Future programs will include The Houseboat Summit II, a two-day conference dedicated to revisiting the ideas of a Great Society and what it really means to "drop out", and update in the themes explored by Alan Watts, Gary Snyder, Tim Leary and Allen Ginsberg at the legendary 1967 Houseboat Summit, originally published by the SF Oracle as "Changes".
This is an opportunity to explore Sausalito's visionary past, which is truly coming of age as the former recording studio takes on its new life as a lifestyle center. The event is a benefit for Harmonia and the Alan Watts Mountain Center in Pt. Reyes.
We look forward to an exciting creative evening celebrating the arts, and inquiring minds.
