Acclaimed composer beyond categories

About this Event

Acclaimed guitarist, composer and journalist Alan Licht joins Bob Dylan Archive Curator Michael Chaiken for a conversation on influence, creativity and music “beyond categories”. Following the talk, Alan will be performing new compositions for solo electric guitar.

Since 1990, guitarist and author Alan Licht has spanned the worlds of indie rock, experimental music, and sound installation, appearing on over 100 recordings and touring the world in the process. Licht was renown in the 90s indie rock scene as a bandleader (Run On, Love Child) and supporting player to cult legends like Yoko Ono, Tom Verlaine, Arthur Lee, Arto Lindsay, and Jandek. He has released eight albums of compositions for solo guitar, and his sound and video installations have been exhibited in the U.S. and Europe. With Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo, he founded Text of Light, an ongoing ensemble which performs freely improvised concerts alongside screenings of classic avant garde cinema. Licht was curator at the famed New York music venue Tonic from 2000 until its closing in 2007, and has written extensively about the arts for the WIRE, Artforum, Modern Painters, Film Comment, Sight & Sound, Premiere, Village Voice, Time Out New York, and other publications. His first book, An Emotional Memoir of Martha Quinn, was published by Drag City Press in 2003. Sound Art: Beyond Music, Between Media, the first extensive survey of the genre in English, was published by Rizzoli in fall 2007, and an updated edition appeared in 2019 as Sound Art Revisited (Bloomsbury Academic). He is also the editor of Will Oldham on Bonnie Prince Billy (Faber & Faber/W.W. Norton, 2012).
