Event description

Description

Games of Agile Thrones presented by Derek Lane

When you were little, how did you learn things? How did you learn how to be fair with others?
How did you learn to think creatively? How did you learn to spell faster? Most of us learned
these things from playing games with our friends and families. Playing fair? Games like cards or
dominoes. Thinking creatively? Games that use your imagination like space travel or fighting
dragons. Spelling faster? Wheel of Fortune has been on TV longer than any other game show.
But how can we use games from childhood to learn new things as adults? Easy. This isn't about
using games you know, although many aspects will be familiar. This is about using Game
Theory as a way to learn, and applying it to other contexts.

Experience hands-on collaborative games adaptable to almost any company culture, that reveal
agile values and principles in the context of accomplishing real value. This session will start by
allowing the participants to select multiple games from a list of possible games, that can each be
experienced in the time allocated for this session. Each game is played in succession, until time
runs out. Once all selected games are completed, a Retrospective is held to explore what was
learned and provide additional ideas for how the games could be used in varying contexts. These
are games I use on a regular basis with real teams.

Derek's Bio

After years of fumbling around with fire and smoke, Derek Lane has in recent years found his
calling as a BBQ Life Coach and a practitioner of all things BBQ. In a completely unrelated but
parallel universe, Derek has been known to successfully ply both the art and science of BBQ to
the Agile Mindset, Software Craftsmanship and introducing Organizational Culture Change in
ways scientists are just now beginning to contemplate the full impact of. Coincidence? We think
not!

Striving to find efficient, productive and fun ways to build successful products and highly
functioning, happy teams has taken Derek on a journey as a mentor, coach, consultant,
entrepreneur, strategist, visionary, architect, developer, trainer and methodologist, all while
striving to harness the best technologies available for the job at hand. He is also a contributor to
various books, user groups, open source projects and conferences as an author, presenter,
committer, technical reviewer and organizer.

Feel free to share your experiences with Derek about BBQ, software craftsmanship, BBQ, Agile,
Virtual Reality, BBQ, your favorite technology or BBQ. Oh, or perhaps even BBQ.
