Please join us for the Alabama Reading Association’s Annual Fall Conference November 9-10.

The purpose of this conference is to provide quality professional development for educators across the state of Alabama and the southeast.

Keynote Speakers

Harvey "Smokey" Daniels In language arts, Smokey is known for his pioneering work on student book clubs, as recounted in Literature Circles: Voice and Choice in Book Clubs and Reading Groups, and Minilessons for Literature Circles.

Avi- Avi is part of a family of writers extending back into the 19th century. Among his most popular award winning books are Crispin: The Cross of Lead, The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, Nothing But the Truth, the Poppy books, Midnight Magic, and The Fighting Ground.

Stephanie Harvey has spent her career teaching and learning about reading and writing. After fifteen years of public school teaching, both in regular education and special education classrooms. Stephanie has written many articles, books and resources; her Heinemann publications include the title Comprehension and Collaboration which she co-authored with Smokey Daniels, and The Comprehension Toolkit series which is an in-depth Curricular Resource for comprehension instruction co-authored with Anne Goudvis.

"Mr. Schu" John Schumacher, otherwise known as Mr. Schu by his students and Twitter followers, hunts for the best children’s books so you don’t have to. John, a K-5 librarian in Oak Brook, Illinois, reads an average of 2,000 children’s books every year and posts his recommendations on his blog, Watch. Connect. Read. as well as on Twitter, @MrSchuReads.

Michael Ford is a professor of reading in the College of Education and Human Services at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. He has been involved with literacy education for more than 30 years as a first-grade and Title I teacher as well as a researcher and teacher-educator. His work with the international school associations has taken him to Africa, Europe, Central America, South America, and the Middle East.

Gwynne Ash is a former middle school reading/English language arts teacher in San Antonio (Southwest ISD) with a B.A. (Trinity University) and M.A. (Texas A&M University) in English, Dr. Gwynne Ellen Ash earned her Ph.D. in Reading Education from the University of Georgia. Dr. Ash is a member of ILA’s Board of Directors.
