ABOUT THE AL STEWART

Genre: Folk

Ask Al Stewart to sum up where he is now, musically speaking, and you’re likely to wind up two steps behind where you started; this is by no means an unusual circumstance in conversation with Al, keenly aware as he is that making a leap forward often entails taking a step backward. Sometimes it’s into the library stacks where the late historian Ms. Tuchman dug for material. Sometimes it’s into the record stacks where the late rocker Mr. Cochran made his mark as a teenager singing his “Summertime Blues” so many summertime’s ago.

Al Stewart came to stardom as part of the legendary British folk revival in the sixties and seventies and developed the combination of folk-rock songs with delicately woven tales of the great characters and events from history. Stewart has 19 studio albums between “Bedsitter Images” in 1967 and “Sparks of Ancient Light” in 2008, plus the live album "Uncorked" with Dave Nachmanoff in 2009.

Al continues to tour extensively around the U.S. and Europe. He is perhaps best known for his hits ‘Year of the Cat” from the Platinum album of the same name and the Platinum follow up album “Time Passages.” But his career spans four decades as a key figure in British music. He played at the first ever Glastonbury Festival in 1970, worked with Yoko Ono pre-Lennon and shared a London apartment with a young Paul Simon.

ABOUT THE EMPTY POCKETS

Sincerity, pathos and powerhouse vocals. The Empty Pockets’ often cerebral and sometimes playful indie rock sound is built upon a strong foundation of the timeless Americana, Blues, and Soul that came before them. An old-school sensibility showcased by multiple lead singers, rich harmonies, and skilled instrumentalists sets apart “members of polished yet rootsy Chicago outfit Empty Pockets” (Rolling Stone).

Their journey began with the late, great Buddy Holly. Soon after recording an original demo as “Josh & The Empty Pockets,” a group of childhood friends found themselves featured in a Chicago theatrical production of The Buddy Holly Story, performing as Buddy Holly & The Crickets. There the boys met Erika, who enlisted as the final band member. With more than one distinct voice now delighting their audiences, the band officially became, simply, “The Empty Pockets.” And while writing, singing and traveling together, Josh and Erika fell in love.

Ever since, The Empty Pockets have truly embraced collaboration. Just as "The Band" famously came into their own behind various frontmen, The Empty Pockets have found comparable footing teaming up with a wide range of legendary artists; Kenny Loggins, Simon Kirke (Bad Company/Free), Al Stewart (“Year of the Cat”), Gary Wright (“Dreamweaver”), and Richie Furay (Buffalo Springfield/Poco), both as opening act and backing band. The Pockets' sound has evolved, influenced not only by these remarkable musicians, but also by independent artists and, most importantly, one another. The result is a dynamic musical style uniquely The Empty Pockets'; a surprising yet familiar blend of Folksy Rock ‘n Roll and Midwestern Soul.
