“Beyond Duty”: The Legacy and Lessons of Righteous Diplomats

About this Event

4 PM Exhibition and Reception: Metcalf Ballroom

5 PM Panel Discussion: Conference Auditorium

Hosted and co-sponsored by AJC New England, The Consulate General of Israel to New England, and the Boston University Jewish Cultural Endowment, the Elie Wiesel Center for Jewish Studies, and the program in Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights Studies

This event is open to the public and free of charge.

During the Holocaust, some diplomats from around the world independently defied the direct orders of their governments in order to save the lives of countless Jews from the Nazis. As a result of their moral courage, these public officials have been recognized as “Righteous Among the Nations” by Yad Vashem, Israel’s official memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. The great personal and professional risks they took are described and recognized in a unique exhibition of posters developed by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with Yad Vashem. The Consulate General of Israel to New England, AJC New England and Boston University invite you to join us as we commemorate the victims of the Holocaust and, through this unique exhibition, learn about the diplomats who played a role in saving so many lives.

Following the exhibition, the program will feature a presentation to provide historical context and a moderated panel discussion with Boston-area Consuls General who will discuss the legacy of the Righteous diplomats, highlight the lessons we can learn from their bold conduct and discuss how those lessons are applied today.
