Event description

Description

The Buddhist Recovery Sitting Group is delighted to host Ajahn Amaro for this evening's event. He will talk on the theme of "I, Me, Mine", lead a guided meditation and answer questions.

The Buddha's First Noble Truth recognises the presence of suffering. The Second Noble Truth identifies craving and desire as the causes of suffering. The recovering addict, previously trapped in a cycle of craving and getting and using knows this to be true. But even when the addict is clean/sober/abstinent the cycle of craving for life to be other than what it is continues. Our society has been described as addicted and Ajahn Amaro has described society's main drug of choice to be "I, Me, Mine'. We exist in a world where the fascination with the self(ie)-centred narrative is normalised.

Ajahn Amaro is the abbot of the Amaravati Buddhist Monastery in the Theravadan tradition, situated in Hertfordshire. He was previously a founding co-abbot of Abhayagiri Monastery, in California.

We are very pleased to be able to offer tickets in exchange for a small donation to cover the costs of the event. At the end of the evening, we will pass a box for voluntary Dana contributions for Amaravati Monastery. Dana is an ancient Pali word meaning generosity. The livelihood of all the monks and nuns - and indeed, the entire monastery at Amaravati - depends wholly on the generosity and voluntary contributions of students who value their guidance and wish to support the ongoing teachings of the Dharma. This tradition of generosity goes back to the time of the Buddha when, as now, monks and nuns relied completely upon the wider community for their livelihood.
