Event description
Aire Libre Sessions: New York City

About this Event

Nearby nature presents a chance to find sanctuaries scattered throughout the city. In this Aire Libre Session lead by Alex Dickinson and Julie Scherr, we’ll begin with exercises intended to open us up to our surroundings and current experience before making our way into Prospect Park for a 3.5 mile loop of the park.

Alex Dickinson is developing a ten-step program backed by science to help new and experienced runners create more mindful habits in their movement practices. You’ll be able to test the program first, during a time of transition for one of NYC’s most iconic parks. It’s a place near and dear to many runners, grounding them in the slow turning of time that happens with the seasons in nature, through daily runs and many tiny, cyclical changes.

We’ll explore ideas of the familiar and the new, community, presence, and the power of little doses of the natural world in a city where you need to be intentional to get them. All of this will be supported with community discussion both before and after the run, and we’ll reward our efforts with local food and drink at the Grand Army Plaza Farmer’s Market. Please join us for what is sure to be a special Brooklyn fall day.

This session is approximately a five mile route, and all paces are welcome. We'll begin with introductions and a meditation exercise, connecting us to the people and places around us; we'll end with a short yoga session under the trees, and the option to grab a beer and tacos together. Running connects us to each other and the places we discover, at the end, we'll all be connected as family or as we say, La Familia.

About your hosts

Alex Dickinson began practicing yoga in his mid-teens, after feeling drawn to the studio in his small hometown outside of Seattle. It was a natural complement to the trail running he picked up at the same time. After running cross country at the University of Portland, Alex began practicing even more devotedly. He underwent teacher training in New York City under the guidance of Jean-Marie Paolillo and Elizabeth Neuse. Since then, he’s taught both meditation and a yoga practice with a range of influences, while continuing to race distances from 5k to the half marathon.

Julie Scherr started running 10 years ago to fundraise for charity and has since fallen in love with the sport. Julie uses running as a vehicle for connection to the outdoors and a way to discover new places and meet new people. An avid traveler, running is Julie’s favorite way to explore a new place, most recently running through Mexico’s Sierra Tarahumara with Aire Libre.
