Description

To kick things off, Chloe Kwon and Kevin Horecka will be telling you briefly, but enthusiastically, about Data in the News! What models, discoveries, and tools were in the news during the month of March? Come to the event and find out!

In our first Data on Tap event, Dr. Kevin Horecka will be discussing the exciting world of Animal Shelter virus outbreak management. The Canine Distemper virus is an airborne virus that infects unvaccinated dogs (mostly puppies). The state of Texas has several outbreaks of distemper in shelters per year, and its management remains one of the great unsolved problems in animal sheltering. In order to improve outcomes for animals, Dr. Horecka, in conjunction with Austin Pets Alive!, has developed a computational epidemiological simulation of the disease as well as a framework for determining optimal tactics for fighting outbreaks in a shelter settings using Reinforcement Learning agents. Using these tools, he, and Austin Pets Alive!, hope to develop and validate strategies for fighting this tragic disease and welcome input from interested Data Science enthusiasts and professionals on these ideas, techniques, and their implementation as well as any other questions or comments.

Everyone is welcome. Beer and snacks will be provided.
