9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. John Reiners PhD: Air Quality in SW Detroit and Birth Outcomes

  • Understand how air quality is measured and how air quality varies even within individual neighborhoods in Detroit
  • Examine correlates of air quality measures with birth outcomes in Wayne County
  • Examine correlates of air quality measures and wheezing in young children with respiratory infections

9:50 a.m. – 10:35 a.m. Robert Brooks MD: Air Quality and Effect on Cardiovascular Health

  • Understand the epidemiology and mechanisms whereby fine particulate matter air pollution increases the risk for cardiovascular events and the public health implications
  • Describe the importance of air pollution as an environmental factor in promoting the metabolic syndrome
  • Recognize personal-level actions patients can take to help protect their health from air pollution, particularly in urban US settings.
