About this event
A New Beginning celebrates artists from San Francisco's Portola district, tucked away in the southeastern corner of the city between Bernal Heights and the Bayview.
The exhibition forms part of ArtSpan's Art-In-Neighborhoods (AIN) program which brings art into unconventional spaces with local and tourist appeal. AIN creates opportunities for artists to connect with the broader public and for individuals to make unexpected artful discoveries. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our AIN partnered-site in Portola has closed. However, we continue to honor the historic neighborhood with A New Beginning, curated in full by Phillip Hua, ArtSpan artist, curator, and community member.
“A new year. A new administration. A New Beginning. With so much change happening in the world, artists from the Portola district were asked to respond to this change, whether politically or personally. Where does this change take us? What is the catalyst? And how do we adjust?” - Phillip Hua

The Art-In-Neighborhoods program strives to create visibility and accessibility for local arts in San Francisco. ArtSpan provides the public with free, high-quality arts exposure. Simultaneously, local ArtSpan artists are given the opportunity to promote and sell their artwork. Each of the Art-In-Neighborhoods exhibitions and community events will provide clear, consistent information about ArtSpan programing to educate the public about ArtSpan’s goals and how to become a supporter – by attending our events and buying artwork from local artists!
