AIGA Detroit: Workplace Workshop: Get insider tips from design professionals in your area!

If graduation from design school is just around the corner, this is an event you need to attend. Gain tips and advice from local professionals about a variety of useful topics ranging from portfolio organization to becoming a freelance designer. The afternoon will offer a series of workshops followed by a panel discussion with student peers and professionals. It's never too early to start making connections and planning for your new role as a professional designer.
Check-in begins at 2:00pm in the Halle Building at Eastern Michigan Univerisity (a map is attached to this posting). Attendees will be able to sign up for 2 sessions and ask questions during the professional panel Q & A. Light snacks will be served.
Laura Vernon , Designer at Pryor Design Co., Ann Arbor
Laura Vernon is experienced in developing brand identities for both local and international companies such as Eastern Michigan University, Yummés and CMH Heli-Skiing. She earned a BFA in Graphic Design from Western Michigan University and before her position at Pryor Design Co., Laura worked at a large advertising agency in the Detroit area as a Junior Art Director for GlaxoSmithKline. Now, a Graphic Designer at PDCo., she plays a large role in the development of print, packaging, website and environmental design.
Elise Androkites , Designer at Redhead Design Studio, Lansing
Elise Androkites received her BFA a with a concentration in Graphic Design from Michigan State University last spring. In her last year at MSU, she served as AIGA co-chair of the MSU student group and interned at Redhead Design Studio in Lansing, where she was just hired as a full time Designer.

Somer Myers, Art Director at Digitas, Detroit
Somer Myers comes from the rolling hills of western Pennsylvania and moved to Michigan five years ago to attend the College for Creative Studies and live with a boy who is now her husband. During her time at CCS she interned at DONER, Styleline Magazine and Inetsolution. Upon graduation she worked at Perich Advertising until she made the recent move to Digitas where she is now an Art Director. Not only does she hold a BFA in Graphic Design, she also has an Associate's Degree in Photography.
Freelance Best Practices:
Jane DeLancey, principal and owner of DeLancey Design, founded in 1984.
DeLancey Design, Ann Arbor, MI, designs materials for all sorts of marketing needs for small to medium-size businesses. From web site development and design to trade show booth design plus lots of logos and brochures in between. When needed for a client's project DeLancey Design hires coders, photographers, videographers, writers, illustrators, printers, etc. She has been contracted by over 100 clients and worked on over a thousand projects.
For a brief spell Jane worked at Colorbök Paper Products as their Design Director and senior illustrator. Before graduating from the U-M School of Art with a BFA she attended California College of Arts (Oakland) and Art Center College of Design (Pasadena).
