Event description

Description

Critical challenges facing today’s society increasingly require leadership from and collaboration across the academic, private, government, and nonprofit sectors to create sustainable solutions. Successful leaders must be adept at navigating different cultures, aligning incentives and drawing on the particular strengths of a wide range of actors to solve large-scale problems. As the boundaries between sectors continue to blur and our economy becomes increasingly globalized, these skills are becoming even more critical.

This Thematic Forum will bring together leaders with a shared interest in deciphering the myths, reality and perceptions of the immigration policy and attitude toward “foreigners” general climate in the United States. Through a deliberately designed “peer conference” format, participants will collaborate to identify key overlapping areas of needs, knowledge, resources and power that can be leveraged to develop and implement strategy that will benefit stakeholders across sectors and provide a model of collaboration that can be shared broadly with higher education institutions. Participants will have the opportunity to test ideas from one sector using skills and leadership from others to create a plan of action aimed to impact institutional, local, state and possibly even national policy.

Value to SIOs

Regardless of how diligent and proficient our collective efforts are in furthering campus internationalization, current U.S. immigration policy and its long-term repercussions have the potential to halt and even reverse progress. With so many competing agendas, it’s vital that university government relations staff are equipped to advocate for policy that supports our efforts and to stand against policy that hinders global education and, more specifically, the perception of how welcoming institutions are to international students and scholars.

With unpredictability as a touted modus operandi of the current U.S. administration, what can we arm our government relations staff with to allow them to support this agenda at the local, state and national level? This and other questions will be addressed by a unique range of speakers and participants from sectors/segments that do not traditionally collaborate on this front, despite all being impacted by immigration policy.

During the opening session, attendees will receive updates on current policy and potential shifts within government from invited immigration experts, university and association government affairs staff, and other government officials. Also included will be timely updates from front-line recruiters in key source countries for U.S.-bound students. The forum will take these discussions toward developing shared strategies and tools for equipping international and government relations staff to influence university leadership, as well as local and state government policy.

Outcomes for Forum Attendees

1. Understanding and identifying overlapping immigration pain points of various sectors;
2. Inventorying resources, strategies and best practices to combat obstacles;
3. Developing a roadmap for participants to collaborate with leaders and key voices outside of the higher education bubble to advance shared agendas, identify targets of opportunity, and impact change;
4. Establishing/maintaining virtual community of practice to continue the conversation and advocacy as appropriate.

Travel and Accomodations

Attendees may fly into West Palm Beach (PBI) or Fort Lauderdale (FLL) airports. We recommend the Wyndham Boca Raton or the Courtyard Boca Raton, both of which are in close proximity to the FAU campus.
