Event description
HIV, Self-Care and COVID-19: Lessons for the Future of the HIV Response

About this Event

Self-care is not at odds with the healthcare system, but an integral component—and can reduce the strain currently placed on the system, resulting in better, more accessible, participatory and quality healthcare. Now, in the context of COVID-19, our dependencies on a stretched health workforce are brought to the fore, demanding creative, urgent and difficult solutions. Meeting the needs of people who live with or are at risk of HIV has never been more important, and it must be balanced with protecting health workers and people living with HIV as well as limiting the spread of COVID-19.

Self-care has rapidly become a critical answer in the HIV response. Interventions such as condoms, HIV self-testing, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), self-sampling for STIs, and digital solutions—paired with growing demand by individuals for participation in their healthcare—has led to a greater configuration of self-led HIV prevention, treatment and care possibilities than ever before.

Through a dynamic, interactive session, participants of the SCTG’s AIDS2020 satellite session will discuss the challenges and opportunities for self-care to take hold as an integral component of health systems and as a critical pathway to navigate this next phase of the HIV response.
