K4Connect & Masonic Villages | Case Study of Smart Home, Connected Wellness and Social Engagement Technology Pilot
This presentation will explore the latest in smart technology across the consumer market and how these solutions can be delivered to senior living residents to help make lives simpler, healthier and happier. We will explore the quantitative and qualitative results of a recent real-world pilot program between Masonic Villages of PA and senior living technology startup K4Connect. The case study will follow the multi-month pilot and deployment experience of management, staff, family members and, most importantly, residents as they look to leverage this new technology including smart home, connected wellness and social engagement to improve resident independence, wellness and quality of life.

Nicholas Mahler is the Director of Sales, Admissions & Outreach for the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown, Pa., where he has helped the organization expand new technology opportunities across its 1,400 acre campus, serving approximately 1,900 residents. As a licensed Nursing Home Administrator (NHA) since 2009, Mahler has primarily worked in that capacity within large not-for-profit senior service providers. Previously, Mahler was an operations director and executive serving transportation and parking authorities in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Washington, D.C.
Derek Holt, President, K4Connect
Derek Holt is President of K4Connect, a software company focused on creating solutions that serve and empower older adults and individuals living with disabilities. Previously, Holt was a member of the founding team at Startup America Partnership, a public-private partnership with the White House. Holt began his career at IBM where he served in leadership positions across development, services and sales. Holt received his bachelor’s in Computer Engineering from Penn State and a MBA from Duke’s Fuqua School of Business.
Cubigo & Brookdale | Roll-out of Resident Engagement & Services Platform through an Entrepreneur in Residence Program
Brookdale Redwood City provides its residents access to community services via Cubigo, a digital, cloud-based platform. Through back-end integration and an optimized user interface, Cubigo aims to simplify processes and increase resident satisfaction. The roll-out was done through Brookdale’s Entrepreneur in Senior Residence (EISR) program, providing an enhanced understanding of both resident and staff needs and wants.
Sheila Garner, Division Vice President Operations, Brookdale Senior Living
Sheila Garner has spent the past 40 years working in the field of senior housing, both in the not-for-profit and the for-profit arenas, at Brookdale since 18 years. Sheila currently oversees 110 Senior Living communities in California which serve more than 10,000 seniors. Sheila serves as the Immediate Past Chair of the California Assisted Living Association (CALA).

Bart Schaerlaekens is Vice President Business Development at Cubigo. He has worked both in the United States and Europe, and now lives as an entrepreneur in residence in Brookdale’s Redwood City community. He is experienced in both senior housing and hospitality.
