Event description

Description

AFROPUNK is back home in Brooklyn!

There are few things more Brooklyn than the Weeksville Heritage Center. As the borough's largest African-American cultural institution, it is a multidisciplinary museum dedicated to preserving the history of the 19th century settlement of Weeksville, Brooklyn - one of America’s first free Black communities. Established eleven years after emancipation in New York State in 1838, the self-determined residents of Weeksville were committed to building a strong and viable community that included institutions, land investors, owners and occupants to aid in the empowerment of its people through encouraged civic engagement.

Over 100 years later, four of the Historic Hunterfly Homes remain and are open to the public via guided tours. As you experience contemporary Brooklyn through the lens of art and culture, Weeksville Heritage Center invites you to take a step back into history. The tour also include's Weeksville's latest exhibition, "Fashioning the Women of Weeksville", displaying garments and accessories from residents of Weeksville from the 1860s to 1940s.
