Gala Concert Featured Artist, Bassekou Kouyate

This evening's featured artist is the Grammy Award® nominee, and ngoni (African lute) virtuoso Bassekou Kouyate from Mali. He appears with his electrifying group Ngoni Ba, featuring powerhouse vocalist Ami Sacko. Performances by special guest artists include Sudanese singing star Omer Ehsas.  We are pleased to announce Mamadou Kelly and the Ali Farka Toure Band to open the show! And Congolese legend, Samba Mapangala will perform a rare acoustic set. It's a showcase of 25 years of Afropop. We take great pleasure in inducting Bassekou Kouyate into the Afropop Hall of Fame this evening.

From its start on NPR in 1988, APWW coined a new term, “Afropop,” and gave Americans their first exposure to now-iconic artists: Youssou N’Dour, Angelique Kidjo, Salif Keita, Khaled, Chico Science, Cesaria Évora, Thomas Mapfumo, Oumou Sangare. Today, the program explores the dynamic youth music scenes on the continent—from hiplife and azonto in Ghana, to kuduru in Angola, and bongo flava in Tanzania. Hosted by broadcast personality Georges Collinet from Cameroon, and distributed by PRI Public Radio International to over 100 stations in the U.S., this award-winning program takes listeners and web users to intriguing musical destinations—Senegal, Tanzania, Ghana, Egypt, Nigeria, Brazil, Morocco, Haiti, Colombia, Madagascar, South Africa, the Dominican Republic, and beyond. The New York Times’s Jon Pareles calls the program and its companion website, afropop.org, “a well spring of African and world culture,” adding, “no other organization I know does so well in helping it reach the listeners it deserves.”

This gala concert supports Afropop Worldwide’s ongoing, stellar research and production for our award-winning radio program and web site. This gala will also further the program’s ongoing evolution to a multi-platform service centered based around fresh and unique content published daily, Hip Deep programs, original videos on a dedicated YouTube channel, weekly e-Newsletter, collaborations with television producers and explorations of how our unique content can further enrich classrooms around the world.

Afropop Worldwide

From its start in 1988, hosted by broadcast personality Georges Collinet from Cameroon, the program coined a new term, Afropop, and gave Americans their first exposure to now-legendary artists: Youssou N’Dour, Angelique Kidjo, Salif Keita, Hakim, Khaled, Chico Science, Cesaria Évora, Thomas Mapfumo, Oumou Sangare, and many others.

The ground-breaking series takes listeners and web users to exciting musical destinations—Senegal, Tanzania, Ghana, Egypt, Nigeria, Brazil, Morocco, Haiti, Colombia, Suriname, South Africa, the Dominican Republic, New York City and around the world once a week on your local radio stations and online streaming daily. Afropop is hosted by the one and only Georges Collinet from Cameroon.

Afropop’s web site—afropop.org—launched in 1997, was one of the first websites on African music and one of the first for any public radio program. The award-winning site now offers original audio, the Hip Deep series, video, a rich blog, and the most extensive archive on African music to be found on the web.
