Description

Afrofuturism as an Experiential Education Model | October 6th 7-9 pm
Speaker: Jason Harris (Redlines)

Author and educator Jason Harris joins us from Baltimore to give a talk on Afrofuturism practices. Drinks and light food will be served, followed by a short performance.

Harris describes: In Baltimore, we have developed an Afrofuturism practice that reimagines education through application of experiential S.T.E.A.M. which in this case refers to science, technology, ETHICS, art and mathematics. As engineering is the application of science and/or technology, we see it as repetitive to represent it as a pillar of our pedagogical approach; being that we are grounding this philosophy in experiential activities, the application of science and technology is implicit. We also deem it necessary for our students to be exposed to ETHICS, the principles governing the application of any of these disciplines. Through public art projects, literary production, curriculum development and the development of experiential learning spaces, this practice of Afrofuturism on the ground in community is sewing seeds for positive change.

Civic Art Lab | October 5th-7th, 2018

This talk is part of Civic Art Lab 2018 is the fourth iteration of our design and sustainability lab, held in the gallery and workshop space Chinatown Soup between October 5th and 7th, 2018. Workshops, events, and exhibitions lead investigations into diverse themes such as: climate change and climate resilience, creative re-use, urban agriculture, sustainable architecture, environmental justice, and more.

Civic Art Lab is open to everybody. Tickets are free. Small donations help to fund the lab.

Civic Art Lab is hosted by GreenspaceNYC (www.greenspacenyc.org), a non-profit collaborative that develops and curates free educational programming, hands-on workshops, and public design projects that encourage dialogue, enliven public spaces, and promote the future of more equitable and sustainable cities.
