Event description

Description

On behalf of the local organizing committee of the National African American Male Wellness Walk/Run Initiative, I’m proud to invite you to attend the Second Annual African American Male Wellness Walk/Run. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at the beautiful Joe Brown Park, located at 5601 Read Boulevard in New Orleans East.

The purpose of the African American Male Wellness Walk presented by New Orleans East Hospital is to raise awareness of preventable health diseases which impact African American males at disproportionate rates. As Councilman of District E, I am extremely proud to play a part in not only rebuilding structures, but also lives and the physical health of our citizens as well. This year’s event will feature a day of activities for not only our men, but their families who will lend support to them as well. Our men will receive free health screenings for diabetes, blood pressure, HIV, as well as referrals for prostate screenings. Screening will begin at 7 a.m. and end at 8:45a.m. The walk/run will begin promptly at 9 a.m. at the Read Road entry point. Once the race is finished participants will return to the park for music, food and fun.

In addition, the following elected officials, Senator Wesley T. Bishop of District 4, Senator J.P. Morrell of District 3, Representative Jimmy Harris of District 99, Representative John H. Bagneris of district 100, Councilman-At-Large Jason R. Williams and Councilman Jared C. Brossett of District D, have also committed to partner with us in an effort to shine a beacon of light on the issue of African American men dying of preventable illnesses.
