Description

The African American Heritage Tour of Los Angeles, led by Dr. Toni-Mokjaetji Humber, Tour Director, celebrates the cultural and historical accomplishments of the African Mexican founders of Los Angeles and their descendants, the many African Americans who contributed to the greatness of Los Angeles and California, and locations often overlooked as sites of African American historical and cultural significance in greater Los Angeles.

Tour highlights include visiting Olvera Street, founding site of Los Angeles; the Bridget “Biddy” Mason Memorial, tribute to Mason, an enslaved African woman who co-founded First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles and who became a wealthy business woman; Watts Labor Community Action Committee, a non-profit, community-based organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for South Central Los Angeles residents, where we will view The Mother of Humanity MonumentTM, a statue created by Nigel Binns that celebrates the cultural diversity of the world's new universal mother, and tour The Civil Rights Museum; Leimert Park Village, Mecca of the African Diaspora cultural community in Los Angeles with visits to The Vision Theatre, Eso Won Books, and the California Jazz & Blues Museum.
