AFRICA NIGHT DANCE FUSION, brings an eclectic mix of seasoned artists to center stage, headlined by reggae star LUKIE D at the Grand Luxe Event Center, Saturday, March 25. Produced by Kwevi Quaye and Jesse Anyaeji with the award-winning actor Adesola Osakalumi of the Broadway Musical FELA, as the host, the evening begins with cocktails, conversations, and poetry recitals, leading to the pulsating drums of Solidarite Sympa from Ivory Coast. The choreography of West African and Brazilian dances by Denise Bey, Yarrow King and Mamaxe Dance Collective adds color to the evening. Guests will be treated to the best of dance music by live bands, featuring Afro-Pop, Reggae sensation vocalist LUKIE D, and the Salsa rythmns of GRUPO MANTECA. HIGHLIGHTS AT THE AFRICA NIGHT DANCE FUSION - WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE SHOW
The Host Adesola Osakalumi is best known for his roles in the award-winning Broadway musical FELA!, winning three Tony Awards for Best Choreography, Best Costume Design and Best Sound Design. In 2009, he joined the cast as both a dancer (Area Boy) in the ensemble and as the Fela Kuti understudy. In 2010, he played Fela Kuti four times on Broadway. In the 2011 national tour, he was promoted to play Fela as the alternate lead (playing the character on weekends and on some evenings). When the musical returned to Broadway in July 2012 for a limited engagement, Osakalumi became the main lead and went on to head the cast for the 2013 national tour and garnered rave reviews.
Cocktails & Conversations has become one of the most vital and energetic poetry slams in the southwestern United States, touching on many social issues, as well as current events performed by Nationally-touring Spoken Word Artists and intimate live music performances by the areas most talented recording artists.
Drummers and Dancers features Solidarite Sympa from Ivory Coast, led by Master drummer Yacouba, with choreographers Denise Bey and Yarrow King, presenting dance sequences that explores the evolution of Brazilian traditional dances, and its African roots. From the Samba of Brazil to the Lambda and Mandgani dances of Guinea, Bey and King, takes the audience on a historical journey of style and form. King has choreographed performance pieces, combining traditional and contemporary forms of dance for Batucaxe Afro- Brazilian Drum and Dance School and Performance Ensemble. Bey, a veteran dancer, who toured with Stevie Wonder in the mid-1980's and appeared in the film, "The Believers", starring Martin Sheen and Helen Schafer, will excite the audience with the traditional dances of Guinea.
Lukie D, reggae vocalist sensation, is well known for his interpretation of Ed Sheeran THINKING OUT LOUD. Lukie D started as a dancehall deejay, but it was not very long before his pristine voice and incredible range made him a darling of reggae fans around the world. In the early years, Lukie D joined the Firehouse Crew, noted for fostering the career of Luciano and Sizzla. He released his biggest hit, "Center of Attraction", while with Firehouse Crew, alongside combination hits with Lieutenant Stitchie "Don't Deny Me" and Beenie Man and Black Pearl "Bag It Up". His other hits include, "I Won't Let You Go", "Lonely Nights", "Let Me Love You Now", "Heavy Load" and "You've Got It Going". In 1997, Lukie D released a 20-track cover versions of the music of AC/DC "You Shook Me" and Queen's "We Will Rock You".
