The Monterey Bay Chapter of the International Association of Fundraising Professionals hosts its 2019 Summer Fundraising Summit on Wednesday, June 5, at Embassy Suites, Seaside, CA.

The full-day conference will include a continental breakfast, a renowned keynote speaker, six breakout sessions, a networking lunch, a general session, wine reception, and more!

Our keynote speaker is Brigid McGrath Massie, author and business consultant. Brigid has delivered thousands of keynote speeches and management seminars throughout the United States focusing on enhancing personal effectiveness, leadership skills, management abilities, sales skills, and customer service.

Last year’s attendees came from throughout Monterey County, as well as San Benito County and the Silicon Valley. They included nonprofit Executive Directors and Directors of Development; Planned Giving, Major Gift and Stewardship Officers; Board Members; Executives and Officers from regional funding organizations; and nonprofit industry consultants and service providers.

In this lively, practical and humor-filled keynote, Brigid McGrath Massie will share tips and strategies for increasing your personal effectiveness in your work and in your life.

You'll learn:

  • The 3 essential elements of personal effectiveness

  • The do's and don'ts of giving and receiving criticism.

  • A simple formula for giving successful feedback.

  • How to create a motivating working environment for staff at all levels.

  • How to turn stress from a liability into an asset.

  1. Self and Systems: Awareness of Equity and Diversity in Philanthropy, Victoria Verlezza -- CSUMB

    • This session will aim to raise individual awareness of self within systems specifically related to the philanthropy and fundraising arena. The goals of the session are to increase understanding of how individuals navigate their own identity in the work of creating equity through fundraising. Participants will gain an understanding of themselves to better serve their professional goals and purpose.

  2. Nonprofit Videos (on a Budget) that Engage and Retain Donors -- Steven Shattuck, Bloomerang

    • Up until recently, high-quality video production has been a luxury available only to the largest nonprofits. Now, even the smallest charity on a budget can create a compelling and authentic video that moves the needle for their fundraising goals.In this session, we will make recommendations for crafting an effective, integrated and low-cost video strategy resulting in content that will resonate with your donors, volunteers and other stakeholders.

      At the conclusion of this session participants will:

      • Discover how to create an in-depth strategy based on your nonprofit’s diverse audiences

      • Determine which equipment and technology is best for your organization’s needs

      • Learn how to solicit and leverage crowdsourced content

      • Understand how to best utilize web video platforms and social networks like YouTube, Facebook and Instagram for distributing content

  3. A Whole New World: How (and Why) to Focus on Online Major Gifts -- Carrie Rice and Adam London, Project Donor Love

    • Major gifts fundraising has traditionally taken place primarily face-to-face. Major gifts officers focus on building close relationships with their biggest supporters, and they spend tons of time, effort, and deliberation crafting the perfect ask.

      But what if we told you that online major gifts fundraising is possible... and that it's growing in popularity? And that you can you can use it in those in-person asks to get larger donations faster?

      This presentation will focus on how to make major gift giving online easy and compelling! We'll give you actionable tips on how to implement online giving specifically focused on major donors, many of whom have been waiting for this option.

      Key points will include:

      • The current experience for major donors attempting to make gifts online is poor

      • Making major gifts online should be almost as seamless as an eCommerce experience

      • You can raise gift amounts by making online giving easy and compelling for your major donors

  1. Innovation at Any Age!-- E Griffin Ortiz, Digital NEST and Josh Madfis, United Way MC

    • You know you must change to continue to meet the needs of our evolving community. But isn't my organization too old? Too young? Too big or too small? In this panel discussion, two completely different organizations demonstrate their diverse approach to the idea of innovation and tell you how to stay relevant, mission-driven and delivering high impact results.

  2. Strategic Communications to Support Your Fundraising Goals -- Caitlin Scott, FCP CommunicationsTBD

    • This session will describe how to develop a communications strategy to support your fundraising goals. We will discuss how to identify key audiences for fundraising efforts, develop messages that will resonate with those audiences and identify tactics to reach them. By the end of this session, attendees will understand how to use social media, traditional media, digital assets and other tools to effectively fund raise.

Closing General Session: 3:30 - 4:15

Meet the Funders!

Learn about the major funders in our region through intimate small table discussions with representatives from local foundations, including Monterey Peninsula Foundation, Community Foundation for Monterey County, Institute for Innovation and Economic Development and more! You will get 15 minutes with different orgs of your choice to learn about the biggest sources of funding and get the inside scoop on their resources. This will be a great opportunity to introduce yourself to organization-changing opportunities!
