When working with a 2SLGBTQ+ child or youth, we are usually working with a family system. This course enables participants to develop strategies for providing affirming care for these young people and their family members. Participants will increase their knowledge of the topics and challenges that arise to add to their professional toolbox of strategies.
Target Audience: Mental Health Professionals Content Level: Beginning to Intermediate
About the Instructor
Tavi Hawn has worked in the clinical social work field for 15 years. They authored the book "Cultural Awareness in Therapy with Trans and Gender Non-Conforming Adults and Older People: A Practical Guide." Tavi co-founded a nonprofit summer camp for LGBTQ+ you 8 years ago that continues today. They have also founded two LGBTQ+ healing centers.
Learning Objectives:
After attending this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe 3 sexual identities and 3 gender identities a young person might hold.
- Name at least 1 framework for family work with 2SLGBTQ+ children and youth.
- Examine at least 3 barriers to affirming care.
- Commit to at least 1 new strategy or skill to apply in their practice.
Course Outline:
10:00-11:00: Gender and Sexuality Terminology, Family Challenges & Considerations
11:00-11:45: Individual Work with Children/Teens
11:45-12:00: Break
12:00-1:15: Family Work, Identifying Barriers to Care, Strategies to Decrease Barriers

Cost is:
- $65 general admission
- $35 student/BIPOC
Register by April 8, 2021. Cancellations must be received 30 days prior to the live webinar to receive a refund. Requests for specific ADA accommodations must be received 14 business days prior to the live webinar.
Course Completion & CE Information
Course completion requirements: To earn CE credit, social workers must log in at the scheduled time, attend the entire course and complete an online course evaluation via Google Forms. Certificates of completion will be emailed within 10 business days of course completion.
