Event description

Description

Join us on October 11, 2019 for our AFCC-MN chapter’s annual half-day conference to hear what is happening in our chapter, as well as:

The Personality-Disordered Litigant: Strategies for the family law professional in and out of the courtroom.

In almost every high conflict case, at least one of the individuals fueling the conflict can be described as having some characteristics of a personality disorder. These maladaptive characteristics are deeply ingrained patterns that affect an individual’s personality and contribute to the level of difficulty in their relationships. If these problematic behavior patterns are not recognized and managed by highly skilled professionals, the case will result in prolonged, expensive and unproductive litigation that will likely cause damage to the family. Resolution of this type of divorce or custody case will require appropriate professionals to identify and understand these dynamics and strategize appropriate legal advice and interventions. Objectives: Attendees will be able to:

  1. Recognize the behaviors, thinking and emotional patterns of individuals with personality disorders (PDs) that lead to intense conflicts and protracted custody litigation.
  2. Identify mindsets and pitfalls to be avoided when representing or defending against PDs.
  3. Understand the impact of characteristics of PDs on intimate relationships, parenting, alternative dispute resolution and litigation.
  4. Learn techniques for managing cases – in and out of the courtroom – with a PD.
