FINAL AESTHETICS & VALUES EXHIBITION AT FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY
Free Annual art exhibit curated by students reaches its 12th and final year.
Miami, FL April 14, 2018– After 12 years, the Aesthetics & Values (A&V) contemporary art exhibitions, curated and organized entirely by FIU Honors College students, are coming to an end with one final reception.
The program’s final reception will take place at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, on April 21st, 2018 from 4-7PM. The opening reception will be free and open to the public.
The work of artists Jennifer Basile, Gonzalo Fuenmayor, Brookhart Jonquil, Karen Rifas, David Rohn, TM Sisters, Gerry Stecca, Purvis Young, and Tom Virgin will be on display. Together, their pieces form a combination of sculptures, paintings, and installations aimed to immerse its audience in a state of philosophical and political contemplation. Many of the artists above will also be attending the reception.
The reception will include an open bar (21+) sponsored by Bacardi, and food by various sponsors including PDQ Chicken and Bahama Breeze, all free of charge.
Since A&V began in 2006, its students have been the sole curators, organizers, and architects of each annual event. Professor John W. Bailly immersed each class in two semesters of contemporary art education before they are allowed to be the catalysts of their own exhibit. This year, the collaborative work of the students in the A&V course was featured at Untitled Miami Beach Art Fair 2017 (Garbage Wall). Students had the opportunity to collaborate with the Estate of Gordon Matta-Clark on this project.
“This class was probably one of the most immersive in FIU. It inspires students like myself to pursue a dream entirely; to seek opportunities instead of standing by,” Michelle Gonzalez, an A&V student-curator.
The Dean of the FIU Honor’s College, Juan Carlos Espinosa, added, “I have watched A&V grow from a modest exhibition on the second floor of the Green Library to the blockbuster show… that brings together some of the top artists in South Florida.”
After a year of diving into the world of art and realizing its influence on who we are, the students are pleased to extend the hand of immersion to the greater Miami community with the last Aesthetics & Values exhibit coming to the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum on April 21st from 4-7 PM. The museum is located at 10975 SW 17th St, Miami, FL 33199.
