Share AeroLab STEM-based Workshop

Event Details

The Academy of Model Aeronautics and the Arconic Foundation, in partnership with the AIU Math & Science Collaborative, are offering a free STEM workshop at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit.

The workshop features a set of free activities and materials supported by Arconic (formerly Alcoa) Foundation and the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA).  Participation in this workshop provides each teacher with approximately $250 of classroom materials and the opportunity to request more free materials as needed.

The program consists of several STEM lessons using simple model aircraft as platforms to provide hands-on experience for students to practice math skills and science concepts.

Each workshop participant will receive:

  •  A two-disc DVD/CD package featuring Telly award-winning videos and lesson plans for ten flight-based activities illustrating Newton’s Second and Third Laws of motion.

  • A Flight Research Kit containing thirty-five foam plate gliders and activities to demonstrate the Laws.

  • A classroom set of rubber-powered balsa model airplanes that are flown on a 2-meter tether, allowing students to calculate circumference using 2PiR and determine speed using stopwatches and a time/distance formula.

  • Five motor-winders and a pylon to fly these aircraft are provided enableing student teams to compete in an inquiry-based activity focused on designing, flying and documenting the speed of each model airplane.

  • An AMA Alpha, a high-performance rubber-powered model with lesson plans demonstrating the power and elegance of outdoor free-flight aviation.

                                     What is AeroLab?

How things fly is always a topic of high student interest.  AeroLabSTEM-based lessons feature simple foam and balsa model airplanes as tools to teach middle and high school math and physical science.

By using simple flying machines to illustrate how mathematics connects to physical science, the lessons focus on Newton’s laws of Force and Motion and allowsstudents:

  • to calculate the average speed of a moving object and illustrate the motion of objects on graphs using the distance/time formula.
  • to describe qualitative relationships among force, mass and changes in motion as well as forces acting on an object moving in a circular path.
  • participate in teams to analyze data and manipulate variables

Participants in this workshop will build and fly model aircraft, and each participant will receive classroom materials and lessons.
