Event Details

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based sensing applications are evolving rapidly for use in a variety of applications. Advantages of UAVs include small size, low weight, slow flight

speed, extended range, extreme altitude, and extreme endurance. UAVs offer data from a unique vantage point for users who need to monitor large areas of land with high spatial resolution. UAVs transport a multitude of sensors such as cameras, GPS and hyperspectral imagers to map the state of the world over a broad spectrum of frequencies. Sensing and analyzing data from the world in different frequencies facilitates more precise understanding of the state of these systems. It allows the recipients of this information to make better decisions since they have a high level, multi-faceted view of large areas. Industries that employ the use of aerial imagery include agriculture, oil and gas, forestry, metrology and more.

Sherisse Hughes will talk about aerial imaging platforms, the variety of sensors that are utilized and the different techniques used to process aerial images and provide analytical data about the surveyed area.

Sherisse  Hughes founded Swift Analytics, an agricultural start-up  which utilizes UAS (drones) and manned aircraft for remote sensing applications. Sherisse and her team have developed numerous applications for airborne LIDAR, traditional photogrammetric imagery, and spectral analysis.

Sherisse has more than 20 years of experience as an engineer and entrepreneur over a wide variety of disciplines, including, program management, mechanical engineering, systems engineering, aerospace engineering and chemical engineering.

Sherisse is an active member of the engineering community and volunteers not only for IEEE, but also the Society of Women Engineers(SWE) and the Society of Mechanical Engineers (SME).

Sherisse earned her BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Mexico and is a certified Systems Engineer from the Steven’s Institute.
