Description

The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) has been holding Advocacy 101 trainings the last four years. For our fifth year, we are teaming up with Project Bread to expand and enhance these trainings!

Join The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB), Project Bread, and St. Anthony's of Padua Food Pantry for an Advocacy 101 Training for GBFB member agencies to learn how to end hunger here through political action. The three-hour training will walk you through the basics of the legislative process and timeline, legislative priorities that support hunger relief, and the importance of your role in influencing legislative action on those priorities. Specifically, we’ll focus on the Massachusetts Emergency Food Assistance Program (MEFAP), the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Breakfast After the Bell. We’ll practice grassroots advocacy tactics, e.g., making phone calls, meeting with legislators, sending emails. There may also be an opportunity to meet and talk with your local government officials at the training.

We encourage all GBFB member agencies to exercise their right to impact legislation. This training will give you the tools to make your voice heard!

PART ONE: Advocacy Basics

For agencies new to advocacy or those who would like a refresher:

  • Learn the basics of the public decision-making process

  • Learn about GBFB’s legislative priorities for the coming year, and how YOU can influence MEFAP funding and SNAP policy

  • Discuss and practice effective advocacy techniques

PART TWO: Lunch, Briefing and Q&A with State Legislators

A great opportunity to speak with your legislators - and lunch will be provided!

  • Meet government officials from Eastern Massachusetts, who will give you an inside glimpse at the work they do and what they’d like to hear from you.

Who should attend:

Agency staff and/or volunteers interested in advocating for their agencies, food-insecure people and hunger relief. Due to space limitations, please only two RSVPs per agency.

If you have questions or need more information, please contact Dan McCarthy, GBFB's Government Relations Coordinator, at dmccarthy@gbfb.org or 617.598.5012.
