Event description

Description

This 5 week class (Part One) will draw on multidisciplinary sources, using film clips, literature, child development research, psychology, and spirituality. Part One will focus on parenting children ages 0-12 years old and will take a wholistic, humane, and nonjudgmental approach to particular questions that registrants might want to discuss. Throughout this course, we will look most closely at Sofia Cavalletti's research into the religious potential of the child. In addition, we will investigate so-called "attachment parenting" and look at various ways different cultures address parenting questions.

The teacher, Suzanne M. Lewis holds a Masters degree from the Bryn Mawr School of Social Work and Social Research, with a concentration in children and families. Suzanne also holds a Masters of Fine Arts in Writing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In addition, Suzanne Is a formation leader in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, a Montessori-based method for fostering the relationship between God and the child. Most importantly, Suzanne is the mother of four delightful daughters, ages 24, 23, 20, and 15 (and a fifth daughter in heaven), who work very hard every day to make her a better parent.

All material will be online. We use a Facebook group to post video lectures, discussion prompts, and readings. This material will be available consistently throughout the course period, so you can access it at any time: there are no "real time" attendance requirements.

Most of the readings will be made available to you online, through the group.

Part Two (offered separately) will explore various theories of raising teens and will also look at cultural aspects of educating young adults. In Part Two, Luigi Giussani's The Risk of Education will help us elaborate, evaluate, and better understand the educational needs of teenagers.

* The suggested donation for this course is $125 - however, if you can afford to donate more, so that our sliding scale will balance, we would be so grateful.
