Based on KitHub's innovative Adventurers' Club kit, and led by LA Makerspace/KitHub founder (and frequent White House family making advisor) Tara Tiger Brown, you'll build and take home two kinds of microphones:
- A contact mic, which senses audio vibrations through contact with solid objects. The recordings from the mic can be used to make music and sound art: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ee4wCvEGZF8
- A hydrophone, which records underwater: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=754pqkdorhs
Next, you will learn how to use your hydrophone to collect information about your environment, which you can use for conservation research and Citizen Science. Finally, you'll try your mics out in-class at our rad partner space with UCLA's IMLab, located in a historic building across from the under-construction Los Angeles State Historic Park!
Ages: 13+ unattended, or 8+ with parent.
Safety Precautions: Project uses epoxy. Gloves will be provided.
