Sponsored by the Daniel K. Church Center for Social Justice & Diversity and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Bastyr Univeristy's second Health Equity Speaker Series will be a discussion on Advancing Health Equity as Clinicians. Join us in room 165/166 for a paneled discussion, featuring Dr. Benjamin Danielson, Medical Director, Odessa Brown Children's Clinic and Dr. Luis Manriquez, Assistant Clinical Professor at Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine.

Speakers:

Dr. Danielson got his undergraduate degree from Harvard, MD degree from the University of Washington and completed his pediatric residency training at Seattle Children’s Hospital. He has been the Medical Director of the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic since 1999. He works alongside dedicated, talented staff who uphold the clinic’s enduring tradition of growing wellness through quality care with dignity, centering community, honoring culture, and sustaining trust. He also works with community groups and coalitions dedicated to social justice, including the Governor’s Interagency Council on Health Disparities. Knowing that traditional healthcare holds only a small influence on wellness, he strives for better systems that center communities and that see the intersects between health and social influences.

Dr. Manriquez is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, where he leads Health Equity development efforts in the Department of Academic and Community Partnerships. Dr. Manriquez got his undergraduate degree from New York University, MD degree from the University of Washington and completed his family medicine residency training at Oregon Health Sciences University. As a medical student, he founded the Health Equity Circle, an interprofessional student group that equips students to take action on health equity with community partners using the tools of community organizing. Health Equity Circle students have worked with community partners to increase funding for affordable housing by $67 million dollars, support a $327 million dollar bond for early childhood education programs, and legislation requiring workers to have access to sick and safe leave at their jobs. He is also working on developing clinical programs to bring patients and clinic staff together to address social determinants of health in collaboration with community partners.
