Event description

Description

Apologia Advanced Physics

1st Edition

Description: Students will complete reading assignments, questions, problems, tests, and labs with reports for this course. Each student should expect to complete every reading assignment, answer all questions, work all problems, and take all tests. Enough material will be covered at home and in the classroom and lab to achieve two semesters’ credit for a high-school level science with labs.

Who should attend: This is an upper-level high school class involving math and science. Algebra 2 with Trigonometry should be considered as a prerequisite. Also, this class is limited to upper-level high school students who have already completed a basic physics course similar to Apologia “Exploring Creation with Physics”.

Tuition and Fees: Tuition is $200 per semester, and a $75 registration fee is due upon registering for the class. Tuition is due on the first day of class and should be paid by semester unless the student, parent, and teacher agree prior to the first day of class upon a different schedule (i.e.; quarterly or monthly).

What to bring to class: Students should bring the following to every class—

  • Textbook
  • Student’s answers to questions, problems and tests
  • Lab notebook (3-ring binder)
  • Pencil(s)
  • Scientific calculator (performs square roots, exponents, trig functions, log functions)
  • Plenty of blank paper for notes and for in-class calculations and tests

Lab Notebooks: Labs are scheduled so that each student will have covered the material in the previous week of home study. A lab report will be written by each student for every completed experiment. A sample lab report will be provided at the first lab class, and blank lab sheets will be made available. Each report may be handwritten or typed on a computer and placed in a 3-ring binder.

Performance of Work: Students will be responsible for checking and correcting questions and problems. If a student does not understand a problem, then online help will be made available, and some time in each lab class will be reserved for reviewing questions and problems. Almost all tests will be completed at home and turned in at lab class for grading. At times, short in-class quizzes may be administered to ensure that students are grasping concepts at home. Also, a mid-term exam and a final exam may be administered during lab class time.

Class Meeting Times: All lab classes will be held at Lamb of God Church (5140 Hwy 17, Helena, AL) on Tuesday afternoons starting in mid-August and concluding in early May, 4:00 pm to approximately 5:30 pm, and will focus on what the student has studied in the previous week. For this reason, it is extremely important that the student commit to keep up with the at-home work schedule. Missed labs will not be made up. It will be very hard to establish a class grade if 2 or more lab days are missed. Therefore, it is assumed that each student will commit to completing and handing in work on time. In addition, the grading rubric on all assignments will include timeliness, completeness, neatness, organization, and correct presentation of procedures and calculations.
