Overview
This Workshop is not about why gamification is amazing. It's not about how gamification is the future and how inspiring life could be with it. It is not necessarily for the late adopter who is just curious about what gamification is. It also does not focus on what the gamification industry is doing as a whole, especially when that is continuously changing every month. Rather, this workshop is about good gamification design, and how to achieve that through the Octalysis Framework.
This Workshop will focus on a deep exploration of what makes a game fun and how to derive those fun and engaging elements into real-world productive and mission-critical activities. It's about how can you can use gamification to change and improve your company, your life, and the lives of those around you.
Gamification is a combination of game design, game dynamics, behavioral economics, motivational psychology, UX/UI, biochemical neurology, technology platforms, as well as ROI-driving business implementations. Interestingly, game design involves all of the above besides the last one: ROI-driving business implementations.
This Workshop is an exploration and transfer of knowledge towards the combination of all those disciplines that one can obtain from games, as well as how to pour that into business applications, healthcare systems, productivity items etc., and truly make a positive difference in those fields based on Yu-kai Chou's 11-year journey of passionately and relentlessly pursuing the craft of gamification.
Agenda
A full day practical workshop with many individual and team exercises throughout the day.
- Gamification is Human-Focused Design
- Introduction and Background of Octalysis
- Introduction of Level 1, 2, and 3 Octalysis
- Drilldown into the 8 Core Drives of Octalysis with lots of examples
- Hands-on Practice of Applying Level 1 Octalysis
- Drilldown into the 4 Experiences Phases of Octalysis with lots of examples
- Setting up the Strategy Dashboard to Execute on a Gamification Campaign
- Hands-on Practice of Setting up the Strategy Dashboard for your own project
- Practice simple forms of Level 3 Octalysis towards your own project
- An overview of Level 4 Octalysis as an extension of the Strategy Dashboard
- Converting ideas to features to implementation plans
- Lots of videos, lots of jokes, lots of interuptions, and lots of Yu-kai
- Revelation of everything else that can't be learned within a day (No, not Level 5 Octalysis)
At the end of the workshop, you would actually be able to design something that is highly motivating throughout the Discovery, Onboarding, Scaffolding, and Endgame Phases. You would be able to drive better metrics in your product design, in your marketing, in your organizational and cultural design, in your ability to persuade, and in your learning effectiveness. You would finally rid of your frustrations of seeing Yu-kai covering the same basic Octalysis stuff over and over again in all his talks. And you would have finally satisfied your curiosity of exactly what Level 4 Octalysis is.
