Advanced Motivational Interviewing

Advanced Motivational Interviewing [MI] for Tobacco Cessation is an intensive learning opportunity which was developed to facilitate a deeper understanding of how MI can be a strategy healthcare provides can use during a brief intervention for tobacco cessation. This workshop will increase the provider’s self-awareness of competency in Motivational Interviewing through both instruction and skill building.
Participants will move beyond basic competencies in Motivational Interviewing [MI] and develop advanced level MI clinical skills, practice advanced level MI skills and receive individualized feedback.
Participants will learn how to:
- Build proficiency in a client centered counseling style using open ended questions, affirmation, summaries through case studies.
- Recognize client “change talk”, commitment language, and strategically apply advanced level interaction techniques through interactive sessions.
- Develop the ability to respond to client sustain talk and resistance in a manner that respects and reflects without reinforcing the behavior during interactive sessions.
- Ability to recognize client readiness, and negotiate specific change plans that are acceptable and appropriate to clients and their level of nicotine dependence.
