Description

This Advanced Modal Harmony course is an 8-week course taught by award-winning pianist-composer, Berklee College of Music graduate and Presidential Scholar Dayramir Gonzalez. This is a theory-based course in which content and music vocabulary discussed can be applied to playing your instrument or your writing.

The fee is for 8 sessions. Please select either Monday sessions starting on April 29 1:00pm or Wednesday sessions starting May 1 10:30am from "Select Dates" menu. This will schedule you for the full 8-weeks.

Mondays weekly from 1:00pm-2:30pm starting on April 29 and ending on June 24:

Wednesday weekly from 10:30am-12:00pm starting on May 1 and ending on June 26:


Topics include:

-Vital harmonic progressions like II-V-I and re-harmonization possibilities.
-Tritone substitution.
-The seven modes in major scales and their colors from brighter to darker.
-Most commonly used scales in jazz and patterns to implement in your playing routine.
-Pentatonic scales: patterns “In-n-Out”
-Bebop scales and patterns 5/5/9/9 to implement in jazz standards.
-The color of the hexatonic sound on pedal point modal harmonies.

Practice work based on these topics is assigned and reviewed on a weekly basis. Manuscript paper for note-taking is strongly recommended. A keyboard for your personal reference during lessons is also welcome.

Suggested pre-requisites:

We will be discussing advanced concepts of jazz and contemporary harmony so strong knowledge of music theory and harmony is necessary in order to take full advantage of this course.

Format:

Classes are conducted live via the free web application Zoom where questions and feedback are exchanged in real-time. An invitation to join class meeting will be sent 10 minutes before the start of each lesson.
