Advanced Machine Learning Methods for Business Strategy

Taught by: Sanmay Das, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Washington University in St. Louis

Benefits: When you have completed this seminar, you will understand the use of machine learning techniques for prediction and the tradeoffs between more and less complex models, be familiar with different representations of text data and how to usefully classify text based on these representations, and be able to use Python and standard libraries to implement machine learning models.

Who Should Attend: CMOs, CIOs, CTOs, Directors of Analytics, BI Professionals, Data Analysts, Marketing Researchers, etc., who specialize in analytics-driven strategic decision-making.

Level of Prior Knowledge: Basic statistics, working knowledge of any modern scientific or statistical programming language (R, Matlab, Python).

Day One: Thursday, June 14, 2018

Session One: 8 am-12 pm

  • Getting up to speed with Python
  • Machine learning bootcamp
    • Classification and out-of-sample prediction
    • Generalization and overfitting
    • Regularization and Cross-validation

Session Two: 1 pm – 5 pm

  • Working with text data (Part 1)
    • Example text classification problems
    • Pre-processing and data representation
    • Linear text classification models

Day Two: Friday, June 15, 2018

Session One: 8 am-12 pm

  • Working with text data (Part 2)
    • Word embeddings
    • Neural network methods

Session Two: 1 pm – 5 pm

  • Further topics:
    • Topic modeling
    • Evaluating document similarity
