Description

Advanced Interaction with Kinect & Touchdesigner

One Weekend workshop: July 13 + 14, 2019
Saturday and Sunday, 10am - 5pm w/ break for lunch

$180 course fee

ABOUT THIS CLASS

In this intensive, weekend-long workshop we will deep dive into using and understanding working with Microsoft Kinect (V2) to develop interactive experiences that involve the human body and form.

This course will very specifically focus on getting hands-on practical experience using and implementing Kinect based experiences inside the development sandbox Touchdesigner. Looking at both the data that can be gathered from Kinect and the use cases for this data from a client-brief perspective. This course is for creative coders, interaction engineers or anyone else interested in advancing their hands-on practical work with novel interaction devices.

Students should expect to leave this class with a more complete understanding of the ability, and limitations of Kinect and how to implement it into their future developments.

Day one will focus on the development of a number of methods with the Kinect from complex single body tracking, multi-user interaction and rigged skeleton manipulation (both rigid and fluid joint simulations)

The second day will be allocated time to work in small teams to design, develop and implement a complete Kinect experience. Each team will be assigned a brief and client requirement outline – everything else is up to you! (with support obviously).

This is an advanced level class designed for those with existing intermediate knowledge of interaction and network building inside Touchdesigner who want to expand their knowledge with a hands-on group experience building interactive systems with Kinect.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

Students will receive an introduction to the core mechanics inside Touchdesigner as well as some hands-on practical application through installation and experience based settings. Topics include:

  • Overview of Kinect in Touchdesigner
  • Body and skeleton tracking
  • IK simulations and manipulations (realistic bone control)
  • Gamification & game theory for interactive experiences
  • Extensive hands-on development of interactive systems in Touchdesigner

CLASS MATERIALS

Students Must Have:

  • Laptop (Windows or dual boot Mac is recommended)
  • Those without a Windows-based computer can work from pre-recorded Kinect movement & tracking data.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Intermediate knowledge of Touchdesigner is required

Michael Mckellar is a creative designer, instructor & technologist. He has been involved with academia most of his professional life. Currently an Assistant Professor at Practice, within the School of Creative Design and Technology at the University of Texas in Austin, Michael’s classes specializes in the methodologies surrounding the design and development of immersive technologies.

Professionally, he has designed, developed and implemented immersive and interactive commercial work around the world. For clients ranging from construction, realty and even royalty. His portfolio contains a large number of specialist projection and interactive mapping skills from CAVEs, immersive Domes and the connecting human computer interactivity.

He started Programming for People in 2016 to fill a gap in the online tutorial market that was not catering to interactive or creative outlets. It boasts in excess of 10,000 unique viewers each month studying a range of hardware, software and creative computing implementations.
