Course Description

This advanced gait training and running program for individuals with lower extremity amputation (The Amputee Walking School) is offered by the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute in partnership with Dankmeyer, Inc.

Participants will learn how to complete and how to teach the following:

  • Exercises and stretches for Individuals of all ages with lower limb amputation and various levels of amputation.
  • Treatment approaches for improved function and return to an active lifestyle.
  • Instruction on advanced exercises and running techniques for individuals with above and below-knee amputation.
  • Achieving best performance with an orthotic or prosthetic device
  • The dynamics of how artificial prosthetics work
  • How to use muscles properly to control prosthetic limbs
  • To teach individuals with amputation to run, move from side-to-side, bend down, jump, climb stairs and walk with confidence.

The walking school applies hands-on participation techniques. Participants work through the full-range of stretching and strengthening exercises, assisted by a trained professional and/or their spouse/family member. Those individuals with more advanced skill are taught running techniques, while others have the opportunity to review the basic exercises and are shown advanced options to improve their walking gait.

Course Objectives

After the course participants will be able to:

1. Select and perform appropriate stretches and strengthening exercises to assist the person with amputation to achieve increased flexibility, strength and function to achieve the best performance from his or her prosthetic device.

2. Demonstrate and teach fitness modifications for individuals with above- and below-knee amputation.

3. Analyze biomechanical features of walking and running gait with the prosthetic device in persons with amputation.

4 Teach persons post amputation about resources available for return to community recreation participation.

1:00 PM- 1:30PM Registration

1:30-2:20 PM Welcome & Introduction: Introduction of presenters including goals and expectations, and pre test. (1 – 10 minute break will be inserted somewhere in this curriculum)

2:20-2:50 PM LECTURE: Strengthening for the Individual with Above the Knee Amputation2

2:50-3:30 PM LAB: Demonstration and participation in strengthening techniques for individuals with above knee amputation. This includes discussion of compensatory movements which highlight muscle weakness.

3:30-4:10 PM: LECTURE: Strengthening for the Individual with Below the Knee Amputation

4:10-4:30 PM: LAB: Demonstration and participation in strengthening techniques for individuals with below knee amputation. This includes discussion of compensatory movements which highlight muscle weakness.

4:30p 4:50 PM: LAB: Analysis of prosthetic devices and prosthetic device function in walking and running gait.

4:50 PM Questions & Answers, Post Test, Break

5 PM – 7 PM: LAB: Walking Program: Practice walking and running gait techniques in group setting with attending individuals with amputation, applying fitness modifications needed. This includes practice of advanced gait training techniques covered in the morning session. This session includes discussion with participants on community resourcing for recreation participation.
