OUTLINE: Linear finite element analysis

FE Methods in thermo-mechanics

  • Finite element discretisation of the heat equation
  • Finite element discretisation of linear elasticity
  • Time integration procedures (Newmark, Generalized-alpha, predictor/multi-corrector schemes)
  • Explicit dynamic integration (mass lumping, spectral element method)

FE Methods for transport mechanics

  • Finite element discretisation advection-diffusion equation and systems
  • Stabilized methods from a multiscale point of view
  • Variational multiscale method. (A theoretical foundation for stabilised methods.)

Additional topics to possibly cover

  • Variational multiscale framework. (Strengths and weaknesses of a very successful methodology.)
  • Novel discretisation methods: isogeometric analysis, spectral element method, multiscale nite elements, optimally-blended and variational space-time discretisations


TARGET AUDIENCE

The course is for advanced graduate students in engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, and physical sciences interested in developing insights and skills that they may use in their research. Active researchers and practitioners who use complex simulations will benefit from the course, too. There are no formal prerequisites, although some working knowledge of vector calculus and linear algebra will be beneficial.
