This hands on studio workshop will offer participants a deeper understanding of encaustic painting through color mixing, translucency and layering, texturizing, paint application and mark-making techniques, as well as encaustic monotype printing. Students are encouraged develop and explore their personal ideas and visual vocabulary on multiple panels or on a larger scale. It is a prerequisite that participants have completed an introductory level class or have prior experience with encaustic painting. All supplies included. Please bring an apron and wear closed-toed shoes.

Day 1 | Part 1
Intro + Refresh
The workshop begins with an overview of the basics, including panel preparation, medium application and fusing techniques along with studio safety considerations.

Day 1 | Part 2
The next level
Students will begin to add color into their paintings. We will focus on color mixing and creating color washes on the heated palette, along with application and fusing techniques when working with color.

Monoprints
Students will pull one of a kind encaustic monoprints directly off the hot plates. We will then adhere a print to a cradled panel.

Day 2 | Part 2

Students will then apply the skills and techniques demonstrated in the first lessons in order to develop and explore their own personal ideas and expression through imagery and mark-making. Emphasis will be placed a sense of depth and dimension, along with expressing personal meaning through imagery, color, markmaking etc. Students are encouraged to bring in their own materials to incorporate into their pieces.

At the completion of the workshop, students will have a deeper understanding of the processes and techniques of encaustic painting. Students will be provided with handouts for the different processes and supplies that were covered in the course. Students will have a number of small studies completed in the three classes.

Amy offers Encaustic Open Studio sessions, which allow students to put into practice the skills and techniques that they have learned in her workshops. Please go to https://www.amyvanderels.com/encausticworkshops/ for registration information.
