Description

A Great Class for the Intermediate Photographer. A Photography Class full of Manual Settings.

A Class that brings you up to Speed in Manual Photography

This is the second in a series of two short classes to teach you the basics of digital photography. The idea is to break it all down into small blocks of enjoyable evenings or afternoons rather than exhausting and overwhelming full day classes.

You should have a basic understanding on how to shoot with a DSLR, mirrorless or high-end compact camera as covered in Introduction to Digital Photography.

Manual Exposure and The Exposure Triangle: Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO

In this class we will move beyond the scene and auto modes and dive right into fully manual photography. Aperture, shutter speed and ISO are the three most important settings for manual exposure. Once you understand how these three interact and what the impact on your photo will be, you will understand correct exposure. The first part of the class will be devoted to these three key settings.

A Class Full of Manual Settings

We’re also going to cover a broad range of manual settings you can use on your digital camera. In addition, we will show you some tweaks in your menu on how to adjust your camera settings to your liking.

Here some of the topics we will be talking about:

  • Aperture, bokeh, depth-of-field and the sweet spot of lens sharpness
  • Calculating depth-of-field and the hyperfocal distance
  • Shutter Speed: When to use which shutter speed. Dragging the shutter.
  • Picking the ideal shutter speed based on focal length and intent
  • The built-in camera reflected light meter and the three different metering modes
  • Avoiding exposure issues with exposure compensation
  • Practical implications of vibration reduction: VR, IS and OS.
  • ISO: When and how to increase the sensor light sensitivity using different ISO settings
  • The impact of ISO on noise, artifacting and post-processing
  • Exposure bracketing and when to use it
  • White balance settings: Manual versus presets versus auto
  • Focusing modes: Auto modes versus manual focusing
  • Shooting in JPEG versus RAW
  • Advanced menu settings
  • And more
