COURSE DESCRIPTION

 This course provides valuable information to the participant as it relates to the assessment, examination, treatment intervention and potential outcomes for those individuals who present with a vestibular dysfunction. Foundational concepts and advanced clinical topics will include an anatomical review, pathophysiology, clinical examination, review of vestibular function testing, outcome measures, treatment principles and planning, pharmacological management of dizzy patients, review the interface between anxiety and dizziness and central and peripheral vestibular disorders. This course will include didactic information as well as extensive labs to practice examination and treatments for the vestibular patient.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of this course attendees will be able to…

1. Understand the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system
2. Describe the pathophysiology of common vestibular disorders
3. List the most common diagnoses/causes of vestibular dysfunction
4. Recognize the clinical presentation of the most common causes of vestibular dysfunction including
               a. History/Subjective Complaints
               b. Objective Tests and Measures
5. Correctly perform common vestibular/balance objective measures including
               a. Dix Hallpike and Roll Test
               b. Oculomotor Exam
               c. Head Thrust Test
               d. Dynamic Visual Acuity
               e. Dynamic Gait Index
6. Identify peripheral, central and non-vestibular causes of dizziness
7. Understand the compensation process following a vestibular disorder
8. Prescribe appropriate rehabilitation programs to address compensation for vestibular dysfunction including HEP’s, patient education and ways to progress treatment
9. Accurately assess and perform appropriate canalith repositioning maneuvers for the various forms of BPPV
10. Identify red flags and when to refer for further diagnostic testing
