Event description

Description

Don't miss this Advanced Behaviors workshop with the one and only Joel Silverman. This work shop will be action packed while we teach dogs some fun trick behaviors.

· We will start off with a PowerPoint Presentation… only about 30-45 minutes..., and then get right into the practical training and workshop. We will work on Advanced Behaviors during this workshop. Expect a fast paced and fun seminar.

· THE RETRIEVE – We will actually show two different ways. One that is done with a combination of gentle manipulation and treats… and the other that is what we call a “pan retrieve”. It is great for dogs that do not like things being placed in their mouths.

· PLAY DEAD

· CRAWL

· HEAD DOWN

· HEAD UP

· PLACE/BECOMING A SMALL MARK – This is really great because we will start with the dog going to something that is elevated, and slowly size it down to nothing more than a piece of wood that is 2” x 4”.

· CHAINING BEHAVIORS – This is fun as we will start to combine some of these behaviors when trained. It also is important because the dog starts to get used to not getting a treat after each behavior, as we start fading out treats.

Joel Silverman started his animal training career at the age of 16 in 1976 picking up trash at Sea World, and eventually became a marine mammal trainer. He is best known for Good Dog U—his top-rated Animal Planet series that ran from 1999 to 2009. He also hosted the syndicated TV series What Color is Your Dog? which aired from 2011-2014. More recently, Chase Bank selected Joel to be part of their national Master’s Campaign, and he and his dog Duchess starred in a national commercial that aired over 4,000 times.

In the mid 1980’s, after training marine mammals, Joel began doing the animal show with birds and dogs at Universal Studios. While doing the show, it also gave Joel a chance to start working on the set, and that is where he found his niche for years. He trained animals on several features such as Steel Magnolias, Christmas Vacation, and dozens of others. He was also known as the trainer of the Dreyfuss from the top TV series, Empty Nest from 1988-1992. From 1997-2014, Joel did the training and coordination of animal work for of national print ads and commercials for IAMS.

In 1990, he came out with his first dog training video called the Hollywood Dog Training Program. This was sold as an infomercial and sold over 400,000 units.

In 1986, he won the “Behavior of the Year Award” at the I.M.A.T.A. (International Marine Animal Trainers Association) Conference for a behavior he trained on two Atlantic bottle nosed dolphins. In 2008, Joel was voted “Trainer of the Year” at the Westminster Dog Show.

His style of dog training is what he calls “personality-based” dog training, and wrote a series of books about it called “What Color is Your Dog?”. This form of dog training teaches people two things. The first is that the bond and relationship is everything, and establishing the trust will make the dog training easier. The second point is that Joel believes all dogs are different and need to be trained based on their individual personality.

Joel has authored four different books on dog training, and in 2017, launched his own series of dog trainer certification courses. He has certified about 70 JSDT1 trainers in just a little over a year of the course’s existence. These unique hands on course teaches people to be certified dog trainers, and he uses untrained dogs from humane societies, animal shelters, and rescue groups across the nation.
