Course Description

Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program Level 2 (CCIP 2) is the successor to APTA's former Advanced Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program (ACCIP). This voluntary program is designed for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants who have successfully completed the APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor Level 1 Program (CCIP 1), and want to further develop their clinical teaching skills and construct a clinical curriculum. The unique philosophy and design of CCIP 2 both applies and goes beyond the concepts of the structured learning environment of CCIP 1 to enable clinical educators to achieve the best outcomes for student learning.

Course is 17 contact hours; 1.7 CEUs. Certificate will be provided 8 weeks after the course.

Requirements to register for CCIP Level 2 include:

  • Current license as a physical therapist, physical therapist assistant, or other health care professional.
  • Having earned the APTA CCIP Level 1 credential (or, for other health care professionals, having earned CCIP Level 1 CEUs).
  • Having mentored, supervised, and instructed at least 1 student since completing CCIP Level I.
  • Clinical competence in providing services in accordance with license, state laws, and state regulations, as authorized and attested to by the individual's direct supervisor.
  • Completion of the CCIP Level 2 Participant Dossier.

Instructor

Harriet Lewis, PT, MS, retired from the DPT program at Angelo State University in 2015 where she was the Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education from the program’s inception in 1999 to 2012  She received her BS from Baylor University, a certificate in physical therapy from UT Southwestern Health Sciences Center and MS in exercise science from Texas Tech University.  Her clinical experience was in a variety of small and large inpatient and outpatient settings where she was a clinical instructor and the CCCE.  She has been providing clinical instructor training for clinicians at the basic level since 2002 and the advanced level since 2007. She was a faculty member for the basic level Train the Trainer Course in 2012, 2014 and 2017. She wasa member of the work group for the APTA that revised the curriculum for the advanced clinical instructor course, now called Level II.

Course Structure

The program is divided into 3 distinct parts:

  • Prerequisite assignments include completing a Participant Dossier, reading 4 designated articles, and completing 3 of APTA’s online Professionalism Modules.
  • Clinical instructor education is conducted via an interactive didactic course format that is appropriate to all clinical educators.
  • An Assessment Center component (credentialing) of curricula outcomes is conducted to apply information from the CCIP Level 2 didactic instruction.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the CCIP Level 2 training, the participant will be able to:

  • Discuss the benefits and key components of a clinical curriculum.
  • Advance clinical teaching concepts learned in the Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program Level 1 as applied to the novice-mastery clinical practice continuum.
  • Integrate professionalism in a clinical curriculum that promotes the guiding principles to achieve the Vision for the Physical Therapy Profession and the core values.
